Beta-ecdysterone, also known as 20-hydroxyecdysone, is a naturally occurring steroid hormone that is synthesized in many different plants, animals and even insects. Estrogen is often seen as an enemy to muscle hypertrophy, and old-school bodybuilders often utilized aromatase inhibitors to drop estrogen levels or even used selective estrogen receptor modulators to dampen estrogenic activity. Modern bodybuilders on the other hand, have discovered the opposite, estrogen is very much an anabolic agent and is clearly important for muscle hypertrophy. Beta-ecdysterone is further evidence of this being the case.

Beta-ecdysterone attaches to estrogen beta receptors (ERβ), and via this pathway can also increase IGF-1 levels which is highly anabolic too. By activating ERβ, beta-ecdysterone appears to cause a very significant increase in overall muscle hypertrophy. In in-vitro studies, it has indeed been shown that when beta-ecdysterone is incubated with C2C12 myotubes (a common model for studying muscle hypertrophy) it causes significant increase in muscle hypertrophy. However, when the C2C12 myotubes are incubated with both ecdysterone and antiestrogenic agents, the muscle hypertrophy disappears. On the other hand, when incubating the C2C12 myotubes with beta-ecdysterone and antiandrogenic agents, the muscle hypertrophy effects of beta-ecdysterone remained. This clearly indicates that beta-ecdysterone is not acting through an androgenic mechanism, but rather acting through a highly desirable estrogenic pathway!

Estrogen also plays a massive role in bone health, and thus it is no surprise that beta-ecdysterone can exert bone health promoting effects!
